Jan 10: Windows 7 Beta 1

Windows 7 LogoOK, in the techy world of beta testing. Microsoft announced that it was letting loose the next Version of Windows, names imaginatively Windows 7.  Better than giving it a name like vista, which quite frankly was daft. Anyway, MS announced that they will be releasing Beta 1 of Windows 7 at 20:00GMT to the world, but they said that they would only allow 2.5million CD keys. So, yours truly was there, waiting for the server gates to open, so that I could get a CD Key. Wow, were Microsoft so unprepared?!

Firstly by saying that they would only allow 2.5 million keys, they were bound to get a rush on their servers. SO, what happens? yep the party is over.

Due to very heavy traffic we’re seeing as a result of interest in the Windows 7 Beta, we are adding some additional infrastructure support to the Microsoft.com properties before we post the public beta. We want to ensure customers have the best possible experience when downloading the beta, and I’ll be posting here again soon once the beta goes live. Stay tuned! We are excited that you are excited!

I know, this may sound silly, but why didn't MS predict this? It might have been a good idea to use Torrents, rather than try and have 2.5 million users trying to download from a server farm, But that's Micorsoft for you. Torrents for them always = bad stuff. But it is the most efficient way to send a high volume of very large files.

The 32Bit version downloads as a 2.5G file, the 64bit version runs at 3.2GB file. Yep, Torrents are a lot quicker.

Now need to hang around to get that CD Key!

Update: Website to download a beta copy of windows 7 is open again.. find it here. You will be able to download both the 64bit and 32 bit versions and their CD keys.

Jan 4: out an about and no graphics application

This could happen, maybe not out and about, but just out on holiday and have no access to your favourite graphics application and the only one available is the sad excuse that Microsoft provides, you know, Paint.. Well, worry no more. Some cool guys up in Finland have produced a pretty neat website, that has a fully fledged graphics program.

www.sumopaint.com

It's very easy to use, you can if you want, have your account on the webiste. You can of course upload images, which is where the application comes into it's own. Just a sneek preview of what you get to play with....

www.sumopaint.com Screen

Not much of a review, but I think it's darn neat, can be useful. if you want to make nice wonky images when your bored at the office ? not that I'm recommending that you

Oh you want the URL ? well, here is its... www.sumopaint.com

Go on, give it a try 8-) you know you want to .

Feb 18: Disraeli Avenue

In Search of Adam was one of the best novels published last year. Now there is a follow-up novella, Disraeli Avenue and author Caroline Smailes is making it available online as a download and asking for donations to one in four, a small charity doing excellent work.

So with one easy click you can help abuse sufferers and with another click you can download some beautiful, powerful writing. Please do pass it on.

Jan 16: A mile stone

I recall, over 10 years ago, yep, It was a haze of the 90's but I do recall, buying my first hard disk drive, it was, at the time a huge, it was 40Mb! Yep, that was huge in those days. You could have DOS 6 or windows 3.11 , see, told you it was a haze, it was at least 12 years ago or maybe more!
Nowadays, a 40GB, that's 1000 times bigger, may just be big enough for an office laptop with nothing extra added, by extras, I mean anything other than an office application, maybe Firefox browser, you are using that and not that Internet Explorer 7 excuse of a browser? Anyway, 40GB ain't going to get you far and in no short time will you be looking to get a bigger one. As for home PC's well they now come standard with over 200GB, you know, the multimedia PC's, with a TV on board, allows you to use your PC as recorder. You get the idea.
Well, now we have moved on to the next mile stone, say welcome to the Terabyte harddisk drive! Yep,that's the next step. Want to see what it looks like? yep, that's it below... exxxxciting!

You may be surprised to note, that well, it looks the same as a 200GB drive, but this is a 1 TB one.
More info on the history of Hardisk drives for the inner geek in you can be found here, here and here.

Oct 28: Funny Mice

Browsing around the net as I do and found this site at Techspot . It is basically a review on 3 ergonomical rodents for those who care about how they communicate with their PC.
Perifix mouse This one really grabbed my attention by the way in which you hold the mouse is completely different than normal. From the review above, it is also very easy to learn how to use it.
As you can see from the animation it kind of clips on to you hand, you operate it via a tracker ball.
The only downside of this mouse is that it's kind expensive  ($130)( see for US prices )

If that's too pricy you can get a good laser mouse chez logitech.
